How To Make Edible Gold Body Paint

Body painting is a fun and sexy art form. What could make it even sexier than to make it edible?

If you’re in the mood for something fun, scandalous, and outright glamourous, try making your own edible gold body paint. You can paint yourself or a partner like royalty and then have fun licking it off like an animal.

But before you get to the fun part, make sure you make the edible body paint properly. A poorly concocted recipe can result in a sloppy mess instead of a shimmering gold sheen.

Here’s the quick and dirty of how to make edible gold body paint:

Edible gold body paint can be made with a mixture of edible gold luster, clear vodka, and sugar. Mix the ingredients to a consistency appropriate for your application method. Edible gold body paint can be applied using a paintbrush, your fingers, or an airbrush.

This recipe is simple, effective, and bound to make for a good time. Read on to learn exactly how to make it happen!

Edible Gold Body Paint Ingredients

There are only 3 main ingredients for this gold body paint recipe:

  1. Edible Gold Luster Dust
  2. Vodka
  3. Sugar

Luster dust is an edible decorative powder commonly used in baking and confectionary decorating.

There are many different brands and types of luster dust. For edible gold body paint, we want luster dust of the shiny gold variety that’s also dark enough to show up on the skin.

Here’s my recommendation:

Best All Around Airbrush for Automotive Paint

This edible gold luster dust is great for body paint because of its natural shine. Other gold luster dusts just look flat in comparison. The dust is also fine enough to mix into a solution that can be sprayed out of an airbrush. For a “real gold” look that’s versatile and not too expensive, you can’t go wrong with the HomeHere brand.

A clear vodka works great as a sort of paint “solvent” because it’s edible and it dries fast and clear on the skin.

White sugar will give your body paint some flavor. Keep in mind that it will be sticky!

If you want to avoid the stickiness, experiment with different flavors and sweeteners – I’ve seen recipes that use honey powder, beeswax, almond extract, etc.

Really, the sky’s the limit with what can be used as flavor – let me know what you use to flavor your body paint in the comments!

How to Mix Edible Gold Body Paint

What you need to mix edible gold body paint:

  1. Small glass bowl
  2. Eye dropper
  3. Small paint brush

STEP 1: Put about a teaspoon of luster dust and a teaspoon of sugar into the small glass bowl

STEP 2: Add a few drops of vodka at a time

STEP 3: Mix with the paint-brush and add drops of vodka as needed until it is the right consistency

NOTE: The right consistency depends on your application method. If you’re applying your edible body paint with a paintbrush, a thick paste is appropriate. If you’re using an airbrush, you want to make the paint the consistency of milk.

How to Apply Edible Gold Body Paint

How you apply your edible gold body paint is really up to you! You could use a traditional application method like a paintbrush or you could throw globs of gold paint at your partner like you’re having a mud fight.

The three most common application methods are:

  1. Paintbrush
  2. Airbrush
  3. Fingers

The paintbrush method is very straightforward and the most obvious. Just pick up a pack of small artist’s brushes and you have every size you could want for drawing gold design’s on your skin.

The airbrush application method is also an amazing option. Alcohol-based paint allows for a consistency that can be sprayed out of an airbrush. The designs that are possible with freehand and stencil work are truly incredible.

If you’re new to this airbrush bodypainting, the good news is that it’s very easy to get into!

On a similar note, you can use an airbrush to decorate other edible delights. Check out this article on how to make your own airbrush food coloring.

Fingers are the most primitive and probably the most fun application method. Not much explanation here, you’ve done finger painting in kindergarten, right?

For a really fun night in, slather edible gold body paint all over your palms and take turns with your partner making big handprints all over each other’s bodies.

Then take turns licking the paint off.

Finger painting is a great time! Sometimes the easiest solution is the best.

What really makes the gold body paint, you know, “gold” is a nice glittery shine.

  5. Blender

Here are the step-by-step instructions to make edible gold glitter:

STEP 2: Let the gelatin “bloom” in the water for 10 minutes (which means to let it sit and dissolve)

STEP 3: Microwave and melt the mixture until its a clear liquid

STEP 5: Add 10 – 15 drops of gold food coloring to the liquid and stir

STEP 6: Pour the mixture onto a flat sheet of cling wrap and spread into an even layer with the paintbrush

STEP 7: Let the gelatin mixture dry for 24 hours

STEP 8: Peel off the dry gelatin sheet from the cling wrap
